Intro

This blog gains its name from the book Steele's Answers published in 1912. It began as an effort to blog through that book, posting each of the Questions and Answers in the book in the order in which they appeared. I started this on Dec. 10, 2011. I completed blogging from that book on July 11, 2015. Along the way, I began to also post snippets from Dr. Steele's other writings — and from some other holiness writers of his times. Since then, I have begun adding material from his Bible commentaries. I also sometimes rewrite and update some of his essays for this blog.

1 John 4:13-21 - Love is the Mark of the Christian (2)





d. iv. 1-v. 12. The Sources of Sonship: Possession of the Spirit as shown by Confession of the Incarnation.

  •     The Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Error (iv. 1-6)
  •     Love is the Mark of the Children of Him who is Love (iv. 7-21).
  •     Faith Is the Source of Love, the Victory over the World, and the Possession of Life (v. 1-12).

 



13 hereby know we that we abide in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit

13. "Hereby know we." Love to man is a proof that God abides within us, just as the stream argues the existence of the fountain. This Epistle of John is as full of tests of character as a complete chemical laboratory is amply furnished with tests of substances. Hence the constant occurrence of the phrases "we know" and "hereby we know." See iii. 24, iv. 13, 15, 16, v. 20, 15; John vi. 56, xiv. 20, xv. 5.

"That we abide in Him and He in us." Says Basil, "The Spirit is the place for the saints; and the saint is a place appropriate to the Spirit." Prof. Austin Phelps declares that next to the mystery of Three Persons in One Nature is the mystery of the Divine Spirit abiding in the human spirit. This mutual abiding, a favorite doctrine with John, is an expression of the most intimate and delightful fellowship. It is a strong incidental proof of the supreme divinity of Christ that he is frequently spoken of as one of the parties to this mutual abiding (John vi. 56, xiv. 20, xv. 5, xvii. 26); for no created personality can enter into and abide in another.

1 John1:5-10 - God is Light


 i. 5 - ii. 28. GOD IS LIGHT.

a. i. 5 - ii. 11. What Walking in the Light involves: the Condition and Conduct of the Believer.

  • Fellowship with God and with the Brethren (i. 5-7).

  • Consciousness and confession of sin [committed before forgiveness] (i. 8-10).

  • Obedience to God by Imitation of Christ (ii. 1-6).

  • Love of the Brethren (ii.7-11).


 

5 And this is the message which we have heard from him, and announce unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all

5. "This is the message." The revelation of God's moral character; which must be known before we can be assimilated to its beauty and purity. Harmony must rest on a mutual knowledge and a moral likeness and sympathy. This constitutes true spiritual fellowship. The incarnation brings God to the knowledge of men. The work of the Spirit in the believer conforms him to the image of God revealed in Christ.

On Confession to a Priest

QUESTION: When did the people first confess their sins to a priest?


ANSWER: In the fourth century the bishops began to give absolution without confession in public, but privately. But it did not become imperative as a sacrament, once a year, till the Fourth Lateran Council in A. D. 1215. Then it became an indispensable duty laid upon every one from the Emperor to the peasant, to open the whole heart to the priesthood.

Confession and Restitution

QUESTION: I am not a subscriber to your paper, but I need advice. How much confession and restitution does God require of an awakened soul?


ANSWER: I will let Gypsy Smith answer. While in Boston recently he received several anonymous letters from one man earnestly requesting prayers. At last he requested him, if in the audience, to meet him in the inquiry room. Here the man whispered to the evangelist that he wished to become a Christian, but he had been stealing money of his employers. Gypsy Smith told him to get right with God first, then he would, be in a better way to get right with men. In a few days he reported that after getting right with God by the experience of forgiveness, he confessed to his astonished employers, stating his willingness to make restitution so far as was in his power, or to go to jail. When they asked what had happened to induce this confession, he replied, "I have been converted to Christ and he has forgiven me." They replied, "Then we, too, will forgive you." I am not sure that every confessing thief would come off in the same way, but I am sure that it is best to get right with God first. This will prepare the way to get right with man.

Confessing Christ

A confessing mouth always attends a believing heart.

"Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what he hath done for my soul."

This declaration, constantly put forth by living men, is perpetual testimonial to the spiritual medicine advertised in the word of God. A specific held up before the public from year to year, unaccompanied by attested cures, comes to be distrusted and neglected. Hence even the blood of sprinkling, potent to cleanse the heart from all unrighteousness, needs something more than the advertisement of the inspired penman; it needs the joyful voice of the healed leper, crying, "It hath cleansed me!"
